He represented the [Buxar constituency](/source/Buxar_(Lok_Sabha_constituency)) of Bihar for four consecutive terms as a member of the [Bharatiya Janata Party](/source/Bharatiya_Janata_Party) (BJP), having previously sat as a member of the [Legislative Assembly of Bihar](/source/Legislative_Assembly_of_Bihar) from 1972.
