**Laith Hussein Shihaib Al-Tawlid** ([Arabic](/source/Arabic_language): ليث حسين شهيب التولد; born 13 October 1968) is an Iraqi former [football](/source/Association_football) player who played as a [midfielder](/source/Midfielder) and served as the [captain](/source/Captain_(association_football)) of the [Iraqi national team](/source/Iraq_national_football_team).[2] He was vital to speaking out against [Uday Hussein](/source/Uday_Hussein), the chairman of the Iraqi Olympic Committee, who was known for his brutality against the football team.[3]

## International career

Hussein made his international debut at the age of 17 in 1986. He played in the [1988 Olympics](/source/Football_at_the_1988_Summer_Olympics) in Seoul and helped [Iraq](/source/Iraq_national_football_team) win the [Asian Youth Championship](/source/AFC_Youth_Championship) in Doha. In the [World Youth Cup](/source/1989_FIFA_World_Youth_Championship) in Saudi Arabia a year later, Hussein was on the verge of joining Spanish giants [Barcelona](/source/FC_Barcelona), after scoring one of the goals in a 2–0 win over [Spain](/source/Spain_national_under-20_football_team), helping Iraq to top their group, but was denied this move by then-president [Saddam Hussein](/source/Saddam_Hussein).[*[citation needed](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Citation_needed)*]
