Father of Ptolemy I Soter

For the rune, see [Laukaz](/source/Laukaz).

Lagus Born 4th c. BC Died 4th c. BC Spouse Arsinoe of Macedon Issue Ptolemy I, Pharaoh of Egypt Ancient Greek Λᾶγος

**Lagus** **of Eordaia** ([Ancient Greek](/source/Ancient_Greek_language): Λᾶγος, *Lagos*; lived 4th century BC) was a [Macedonian](/source/Ancient_Macedonians) courtier and the father of [Ptolemy](/source/Ptolemy_I_Soter), the founder of the [Ptolemaic dynasty](/source/Ptolemaic_dynasty). He married [Arsinoe](/source/Arsinoe_of_Macedonia) of the [Argead dynasty](/source/Argead_dynasty) and a [concubine](/source/Concubine) of [Philip II](/source/Philip_II_of_Macedon), king of [Macedon](/source/Macedon), who was said to have been pregnant at the time of their marriage, forming the basis of Ptolemy as the son of Philip; but it is possible that this is a later myth fabricated to glorify the Ptolemaic dynasty.[1] From an anecdote recorded by [Plutarch](/source/Plutarch),[2] it is clear that Lagus was a man of obscure birth; hence, when [Theocritus](/source/Theocritus)[3] calls Ptolemy a descendant of [Heracles](/source/Heracles), he probably means to represent him as the son of Philip. Lagus and Arsinoe also were parents to [Menelaus](/source/Menelaus_(son_of_Lagus)).

## Misreading

Lagus is believed by some to have subsequently married [Antigone](/source/Antigone_of_Macedonia), niece of [Antipater](/source/Antipater), by whom he became the father of [Berenice](/source/Berenice_I_of_Egypt), afterwards the wife of Ptolemy, but this is based on a misreading of a corrupt [scholium](/source/Scholia); her father's name was almost certainly [Magas](/source/Magas_of_Macedon). ## Lagus (Lykaionike)

Lagus (son of Ptolemy), winner in [Synoris](/source/Synoris) Arcadian [Lykaia](/source/Lykaia) 308 BC,[5] may be a relative of the Lagus family.
