# Lacy Duarte

**Elvira Lacy Duarte Cardoso** (15 September 1937 – 27 December 2015) was a [Uruguayan](/source/Uruguayans) [visual artist](/source/Visual_artist).[1]

## Biography

Elvira Lacy Duarte Cardoso was born in [Mataojo](/source/Mataojo), [Salto Department](/source/Salto_Department) in [Uruguay](/source/Uruguay) on 15 September 1937 near the border with [Brazil](/source/Brazil), a rural area that would come to characterize her artwork. In 1952, she moved to the [City of Salto](/source/Salto,_Uruguay) and two years later entered the Horacio Quiroga Association's Figari Workshop, where she attended classes with painters [José Cziffery](/source/Jos%C3%A9_Cziffery), himself trained in the [Paris](/source/Paris) workshop of [Henri Matisse](/source/Henri_Matisse),[2] and [Ernesto Aroztegui](/source/Ernesto_Aroztegui).[3]

In 1959 Duarte married fellow painter [Aldo Peralta](/source/Aldo_Peralta) and had two children, Pablo and [Pedro](/source/Pedro_Peralta_(artist)), who both also became painters.[4] In 1962, this family moved to [San Carlos](/source/San_Carlos,_Uruguay) in [Maldonado Department](/source/Maldonado_Department) where Duarte began teaching [secondary education](/source/Secondary_education) drawing classes and began to learn [weaving](/source/Weaving). In 1975, the family fled from the [civic-military dictatorship of Uruguay](/source/Civic-military_dictatorship_of_Uruguay) to [Porto Alegre](/source/Porto_Alegre), [Brazil](/source/Brazil), and left the *Duarte Tapices* [tapestry](/source/Tapestry) workshop to local weavers. Aldo died in 1981, and Duarte returned [Montevideo](/source/Montevideo) shortly thereafter and resumed painting. In 1986, she was selected to represent Uruguay at the 1987 [Havana Biennial](/source/Havana_Biennial) and her art would exhibit in the [United States](/source/United_States) and [Europe](/source/Europe).[5][3]

In 1990, Duarte started a series of artwork that included paintings and objects such as wood carvings, bread crumbs, ragged bedspreads, the condition of women and their children in the countryside and people performing rural tasks (Farmers, hunters, trappers, etc.). This project, entitled *Memoria y ritos en el espacio de la mujer campesina*, referred to the differences Duarte observed between urban and rural Uruguayans. This series would exhibit at the [Juan Manuel Blanes Museum](/source/Juan_Manuel_Blanes_Museum) in the [Prado](/source/Prado,_Montevideo) neighborhood of Montevideo, [Rio Grande do Sul Museum of Art](/source/Rio_Grande_do_Sul_Museum_of_Art) in Porto Alegre, [Linda Moore Gallery](/source/Linda_Moore_Gallery) in [San Diego, California](/source/San_Diego,_California) and at the biennials in Paris and [Cuenca](/source/Cuenca,_Ecuador) among other examples of Uruguayan art.[2]

In 2011, Duarte joined the National Visual Arts Commission of the [Uruguayan Ministry of Education and Culture](/source/Ministry_of_Education_and_Culture_(Uruguay)).[6]

In 2012, Duarte exhibited *Pensado Campo: Recurrencias de Lacy Duarte* at the [Museo Figari](/source/Museo_Figari) and *Tiempo y Tiempo* at the [Museo Gurvich](/source/Museo_Gurvich), both in [Montevideo](/source/Montevideo).[7]

Lacy Duarte died in Montevideo, aged 78.[2]

### Awards

In 2002, the [Central Bank of Uruguay](/source/Central_Bank_of_Uruguay) awarded Duarte the [Figari Award](/source/Figari_Award), named in honor of [Uruguayan](/source/Uruguay) [painter](/source/Painter) [Pedro Figari](/source/Pedro_Figari), in recognition of her career of art.[8]

In 2005, she represented Uruaguay at the [Venice Biennale](/source/Venice_Biennale) with an installation that "reflected the neat poverty" of the Uruguayan countryside.[5]
