**Darren Billy, Jr.**, professionally known as **Lab Ox**, is a Grammy award-winning [American](/source/United_States) [hip-hop](/source/Hip_hop_music), [R&B](/source/Rhythm_%26_blues), [pop rock](/source/Pop_rock), [R&B](/source/Contemporary_R%26B), [urban](/source/Urban_music) and [pop](/source/Pop_music) [producer](/source/Record_producer) from [Houston](/source/Houston), [Texas](/source/Texas).[1] He has produced and written songs for artists and groups including [Gary Clark Jr.](/source/Gary_Clark_Jr.), [Rihanna](/source/Rihanna), [Willow Smith](/source/Willow_Smith), [James Fauntleroy](/source/James_Fauntleroy), [Nicki Minaj](/source/Nicki_Minaj), [50 Cent](/source/50_Cent), [Lloyd Banks](/source/Lloyd_Banks), [G-Unit](/source/G-Unit), [Drake](/source/Drake_(entertainer)), and [Yolanda Adams](/source/Yolanda_Adams). He was the first producer signed to [Jay-Z](/source/Jay-Z)'s record label [Roc Nation](/source/Roc_Nation) upon the labels launch in 2009, and remained active on the label until his departure in early 2016.

## Early career

Lab Ox got his start in the record industry with [50 Cent](/source/50_Cent) as a [producer](/source/Hip_hop_music) on former [G-Unit](/source/G-Unit) artist [Hot Rod](/source/Hot_Rod_(rapper))'s demo project.[2] On August 17, 2007, he produced a record which [50 Cent](/source/50_Cent) released, aimed at [Lil Wayne](/source/Lil_Wayne), entitled *Part Time Lover*.[3] The record would later be featured on the mix-tape *Sabrina's Baby Boy*, the last in the "G-Unit Radio" mix-tape.[4]
