Swanston was born in [Brooksville, Florida](/source/Brooksville%2C_Florida). He was a star [basketball](/source/basketball) player at [Worcester Academy](/source/Worcester_Academy), graduating in 2005. He was regarded a 0-star recruit coming out of high school.
