'''Kurt Roper''' (born July 25, 1972) is an American [football](/source/American_football) coach and former player. He is currently the offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach at [North Carolina State University](/source/North_Carolina_State_University). Roper was the interim head football coach at [University of Colorado Boulder](/source/University_of_Colorado_Boulder) for the final game of the 2018 season. He previously served as the [offensive coordinator](/source/offensive_coordinator) and quarterbacks coach at the [University of South Carolina](/source/University_of_South_Carolina) for two seasons. He also served as the offensive coordinator at the [University of Florida](/source/University_of_Florida) in 2014 and [Duke University](/source/Duke_University) for six seasons prior to that. A native of [Ames, Iowa](/source/Ames%2C_Iowa), he was starting quarterback for Ardmore (OK) High School, where he led the Tigers to a 1990 state championship. Roper earned three varsity letters as a [quarterback](/source/quarterback) and [defensive back](/source/defensive_back) at Rice before graduating in 1995. He earned a master's degree from the [University of Tennessee](/source/University_of_Tennessee) in 1998.<ref name="GoDuke">{{cite web|url=http://www.goduke.com/ViewArticle.dbml?ATCLID=1363472|title=Kurt Roper Duke Bio|access-date=December 27, 2013|archive-date=December 27, 2013|archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20131227235844/http://www.goduke.com/ViewArticle.dbml?ATCLID=1363472|url-status=dead}}</ref> His coaching career has been much associated with that of [David Cutcliffe](/source/David_Cutcliffe).<ref>{{cite web|url=http://www.newsobserver.com/2013/12/26/3486819/duke-football-notebook-kurt-roper.html|author=Laura Keeley|title=Duke Football Notebook: Kurt Roper On Florida, Brandon Connette's Return and Jela Duncan's Absence|date=December 26, 2013}}</ref>

==Career==
Roper's coaching career started as a [graduate assistant](/source/graduate_assistant) at the University of [Tennessee](/source/Tennessee_Volunteers_football) in 1996, working on defense, especially the [defensive backs](/source/defensive_backs), and [special teams](/source/special_teams).<ref>{{cite web|url=http://www.utsports.com/sports/m-footbl/mtt/roper_kurt00.html|title=Kurt Roper UT Bio|access-date=December 27, 2013|archive-date=December 28, 2013|archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20131228113443/http://www.utsports.com/sports/m-footbl/mtt/roper_kurt00.html|url-status=dead}}</ref><ref>{{cite web|url=http://www.ukathletics.com/genrel/041105aab.html|title=Kurt Roper Kentucky Bio|access-date=December 28, 2013|archive-date=December 31, 2013|archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20131231001530/http://www.ukathletics.com/genrel/041105aab.html|url-status=dead}}</ref> While the Volunteers prepared for a [national championship](/source/1999_Fiesta_Bowl), Roper decided to follow Tennessee offensive coordinator [David Cutcliffe](/source/David_Cutcliffe) to [Mississippi](/source/Ole_Miss_Rebels_football), where Roper would spend six years as an offensive assistant under Cutcliffe at head coach. Amongst those coached by Roper during this time was the [first pick](/source/List_of_first_overall_NFL_draft_picks) of the [2004 NFL draft](/source/2004_NFL_draft), quarterback [Eli Manning](/source/Eli_Manning). During these years Ole Miss went 44–29, including a 10-3 [2003 campaign](/source/2003_Ole_Miss_Rebels_football_team) which was its best record since [1971](/source/1971_Ole_Miss_Rebels_football_team).

In 2005 Roper coached quarterbacks for [Kentucky](/source/Kentucky_Wildcats_football) under head coach [Rich Brooks](/source/Rich_Brooks) and offensive coordinator [Joker Phillips](/source/Joker_Phillips).

Roper joined up again with Cutcliffe in [2006](/source/2006_Tennessee_Volunteers_football_team) when [Phillip Fulmer](/source/Phillip_Fulmer) named him an assistant coach for running backs. Amongst those coached by Roper was [Arian Foster](/source/Arian_Foster). Roper left in 2008, when David Cutcliffe was named head coach at [Duke](/source/Duke_Blue_Devils_football), he followed as the Blue Devils' offensive coordinator.

At Duke, Roper coached [Thad Lewis](/source/Thad_Lewis) from [2008](/source/2008_Duke_Blue_Devils_football_team) to [2009](/source/2009_Duke_Blue_Devils_football_team). Lewis set many records at Duke and finished his career as the school's all-time leader in pass attempts (1,510), pass completions (877), passing yards (10,065) and passing touchdowns (67).<ref name="GoDuke"/>

From [2010](/source/2010_Duke_Blue_Devils_football_team) to [2012](/source/2012_Duke_Blue_Devils_football_team) Roper coached [Sean Renfree](/source/Sean_Renfree). Duke averaged 381.3 yards per game in 2010, the most for the Blue Devils since their 1989 [ACC](/source/Atlantic_Coast_Conference) [championship](/source/List_of_Atlantic_Coast_Conference_football_champions) team. In 2013, Roper was a finalist for the [Broyles Award](/source/Broyles_Award), given annually to the nation's top college football assistant coach.

On December 6, 2015, Roper was hired to serve as [offensive coordinator](/source/offensive_coordinator) on [Will Muschamp](/source/Will_Muschamp)'s staff at [South Carolina](/source/South_Carolina_Gamecocks_football).<ref>[http://www.thestate.com/sports/college/university-of-south-carolina/usc-football/article48301360.html Will Muschamp has both coordinators locked in]</ref>

On January 3, 2018, Roper was hired to serve as quarterbacks coach at [Colorado](/source/Colorado_Buffaloes_Football).<ref>{{Cite web|url=https://cubuffs.com/staff-directory/kurt-roper/764|title = Kurt Roper - Assistant Coach/Quarterbacks - Staff Directory}}</ref> He served as quarterbacks coach for the first eleven games of the 2018 season, until [Mike MacIntyre](/source/Mike_MacIntyre) was fired, when he was named interim head coach for the final game of the 2018 season.

On December 30, 2024, Roper was elevated to offensive coordinator/quarterbacks coach at [NC State](/source/NC_State_Wolfpack_football), replacing [Robert Anae](/source/Robert_Anae).
