# Kuperus

**Kuperus** and **Cuperus** are [Latinized](/source/Latinized_name) versions of the common Dutch surname *[Kuiper](/source/Kuiper)* (and spelling variations) meaning [cooper](/source/Cooper_(profession)). This process was most common in the province of [Friesland](/source/Friesland).[1] One family changed the spelling from Cuperus to *Couperus* in the 19th century.[2]
