Neighboring districts are (from the southwest clockwise): [Non Sa-at](/source/Non_Sa-at_district), [Nong Saeng](/source/Nong_Saeng_District%2C_Udon_Thani), [Mueang Udon Thani](/source/Mueang_Udon_Thani_district), [Prachaksinlapakhom](/source/Prachaksinlapakhom_district), [Ku Kaeo](/source/Ku_Kaeo_district) and [Si That](/source/Si_That_district) of Udon Thani Province; [Tha Khantho](/source/Tha_Khantho_district) of [Kalasin province](/source/Kalasin_province) and [Kranuan](/source/Kranuan_district) of [Khon Kaen province](/source/Khon_Kaen_province).
North of the central town is the shallow [Nong Han Kumphawapi Lake](/source/Nong_Han_Kumphawapi_Lake). The lake is surrounded by marshland, one of the largest natural wetlands in northeast Thailand. The lake is drained by [Lam Pao](/source/Lam_Pao).
