**Kumaragupta III** ([Gupta script](/source/Gupta_script): , *Ku-ma-ra-gu-pta*) was a later [Gupta Emperor](/source/Gupta_Empire), ruling from 530 to 540. He succeeded his father [Narasimhagupta](/source/Narasimhagupta_Baladitya) in about 530.

His silver-copper seal was discovered in [Bhitari](https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Bhitari&action=edit&redlink=1) ([Ghazipur district](/source/Ghazipur_district), [Uttar Pradesh](/source/Uttar_Pradesh)) in 1889, which mentions the names of his father Narasimhagupta and grandfather [Purugupta](/source/Purugupta).[1][2] The seal of Kumaragupta III allowed for the clarification of the genealogy of later Gupta kings: it gave the names of three Gupta king who had been hitherto unknown: [Purugupta](/source/Purugupta), [Narasimhagupta](/source/Narasimhagupta) and [Kumaragupta II](/source/Kumaragupta_II).[3]

A clay sealing of him was discovered from [Nalanda](/source/Nalanda), which also mentioned about his father and grandfather. Nalanda clay seal of Kumaragupta III mentions Purugupta as [Kumaragupta I's](/source/Kumaragupta_I) son from his queen Anantadevi.

The [Gupta Empire](/source/Gupta_Empire) declined during his rule and the later kings. He had to face [Yashodharman](/source/Yashodharman), the [Aulikara](/source/Second_Aulikara_dynasty) ruler of Malwa who had defeated the [Huna king](/source/Alchon_Huns) [Mihirakula](/source/Mihirakula) at [Sondani](/source/Battle_of_Sondani) and was conquering Northern India. J.L. Jain is of the view that Kumaragupta III was killed during this conflict, around 530 and Kumaragupta III's father [Narasimhagupta](/source/Narasimhagupta) committed suicide on hearing the news.[4] He was succeeded by his son [Vishnugupta](/source/Vishnugupta_(Gupta_Empire)).

		- The [Nalanda](/source/Nalanda) clay seal of [Vishnugupta](/source/Vishnugupta_(Gupta_Empire)) states that Vishnugupta was son of Kumaragupta III, and grandson of [Purugupta](/source/Purugupta).[5]
