# Kula Gulf

**Kula Gulf** is a waterway in the [Western Province](/source/Western_Province_(Solomon_Islands)) of the [Solomon Islands](/source/Solomon_Islands). It lies between the islands of [Kolombangara](/source/Kolombangara) to the west, [Arundel Island](/source/Arundel_Island) (Kohinggo) to the southwest, and [New Georgia](/source/New_Georgia) to the south and east. To the north, it opens into [New Georgia Sound](/source/New_Georgia_Sound) ("the Slot"). To the southwest, it connects via [Blackett Strait](/source/Blackett_Strait) to [Vella Gulf](/source/Vella_Gulf) and the [Solomon Sea](/source/Solomon_Sea).

During the [Solomon Islands campaign](/source/Solomon_Islands_campaign) in [World War II](/source/World_War_II), two minor naval battles between the [Imperial Japanese Navy](/source/Imperial_Japanese_Navy) and the [United States Navy](/source/United_States_Navy) were fought here in July, 1943. The first was the [Battle of Kula Gulf](/source/Battle_of_Kula_Gulf) fought on the night of 5–6 July 1943. In that engagement, the cruiser [USS *Helena*](/source/USS_Helena_(CL-50)) was sunk.

The second battle was the [Battle of Kolombangara](/source/Battle_of_Kolombangara) fought on the night of 12–13 July 1943. In that engagement, the destroyer [USS *Gwin*](/source/USS_Gwin_(DD-433)) and the [Japanese cruiser *Jintsū*](/source/Japanese_cruiser_Jints%C5%AB) were sunk.
