'''Kris John Ife''' (16 June 1946 – 8 November 2013) was an English [singer](/source/singing) and [songwriter](/source/songwriter), who enjoyed modest success in Britain in the 1960s and 1970s. He [recorded](/source/sound_recording_and_reproduction) a [version](/source/cover_version) of "[Hush](/source/Hush_(Billy_Joe_Royal_song))", later covered by [Deep Purple](/source/Deep_Purple).

==Career==
Born in [Aylesbury](/source/Aylesbury), [Buckinghamshire](/source/Buckinghamshire), England, Ife's father was based at [RAF Halton](/source/RAF_Halton) near [Wendover](/source/Wendover). Ife moved to [London](/source/London) and attended [St Clement Danes School](/source/St_Clement_Danes_School) in [Acton](/source/Acton%2C_London), and it was whilst at school that he formed a [skiffle](/source/skiffle) [group](/source/band_(music)) called the Gravediggers.

After leaving school he started a group called the Vikings with John Howell and Ray Hailey. The Vikings recorded "Space Walk", [produced](/source/record_producer) by Curly Clayton which was not released under their name, but turned up some years later under the name of "Gemini" and with a different producer listed, although the recording was the same.

In 1964, the Vikings [manager](/source/management), John Smith, amalgamated them with The Quiet Five, taking their [lead vocalist](/source/lead_vocalist) Patrick Dane and [bassist](/source/bassist) [Richard Barnes](/source/Richard_Barnes_(musician)), along with the name. Dane left some time later, before the Quiet Five had recorded anything. Despite their name there were six members, John Howell ([organ](/source/Electronic_organ)/[vocals](/source/singing)), Kris Ife ([guitar](/source/guitar)/vocals), Richard Barnes ([bass guitar](/source/bass_guitar)/vocals), Roger McKew ([lead guitar](/source/lead_guitar)), Ray Hailey ([drum](/source/drum)s) and John "Satch" Goswell ([saxophone](/source/saxophone)).<ref>{{cite web|url=http://www.45-rpm.org.uk/dirq/quiet5.htm |title=Quiet Five |publisher=45-rpm.org.uk |accessdate=2014-06-26}}</ref> During their time together the Quiet Five released a handful of [singles](/source/single_(music)) and managed to get into the [Top 50](/source/Top_40) of the [UK Singles Chart](/source/UK_Singles_Chart) in 1965 with a song written by Ife, "When the Morning Sun Dries the Dew", and again in 1966 with a cover of the [Simon & Garfunkel](/source/Simon_%26_Garfunkel) song "[Homeward Bound](/source/Homeward_Bound_(Simon_%26_Garfunkel_song))".<ref name="British Hit Singles & Albums">{{cite book

The Quiet Five played at [Windsor Castle](/source/Windsor_Castle) at a party for [Prince Charles](/source/Charles_III)' 18th birthday in December 1966, and subsequently they played on the 'Society Circuit', including the Royal Hunt Ball and the [Venice Film Festival](/source/Venice_Film_Festival).

Ife left The Quiet Five in 1967 for a [solo](/source/solo_(music)) career, and it was at this time that he recorded a cover of [Joe South](/source/Joe_South)'s "Hush". The version inspired [Deep Purple](/source/Deep_Purple)'s 1968 hit cover of the same song.<ref name="AMG"/>

Ife was asked to sing a track "Imagination" for the British [record producer](/source/record_producer) [Mark Wirtz](/source/Mark_Wirtz), and wrote songs with [J. Vincent Edwards](/source/J._Vincent_Edwards) and [Miki Antony](/source/Miki_Antony).<ref name="AMG"/> Ife formed a [session](/source/session_musician) band which developed into the Matchmakers, to record material for Wirtz. Wirtz also recorded and produced the Judd album, ''Snarling Mumma Lion'',<ref>{{cite web|author=Richie Unterberger|author-link=Richie Unterberger|url=http://www.allmusic.com/album/snarling-mumma-lion-mw0000373985 |title=Snarling Mumma Lion – Judd | Songs, Reviews, Credits, Awards |publisher=AllMusic |accessdate=2014-06-26}}</ref> which was co-written by Ife. Ife also recorded with J. Vincent Edwards under the name Jackson & Jones.<ref name="AMG">{{cite web|author=Richie Unterberger |url=http://www.allmusic.com/artist/kris-ife-mn0000468103 |title=Kris Ife | Biography |publisher=AllMusic |accessdate=2014-06-25}}</ref>

Most of Ife's recordings were released as ''Hush – Definitive Collection 1967–1973'',<ref>{{cite web|author=Richie Unterberger |url=http://www.allmusic.com/artist/jackson-jones-mn0001789156 |title=Jackson & Jones | Biography |publisher=AllMusic |accessdate=2014-06-26}}</ref> on [RPM Records](/source/RPM_Records_(United_Kingdom)).<ref name="AMG"/> The Quiet Five recordings are on the [CD](/source/Compact_disc), ''When the Morning Sun Dries the Dew'',<ref>{{cite web|author=Richie Unterberger |url=http://www.allmusic.com/artist/the-quiet-five-mn0000896096/biography |title=The Quiet Five | Biography |publisher=AllMusic |accessdate=2014-06-26}}</ref> also on RPM Records.<ref name="AMG"/>

In October 2008, he went to [Philadelphia](/source/Philadelphia), United States, and recorded a CD of [skiffle](/source/skiffle) songs with J. Vincent Edwards and Wayne S. Newton, under the name of The Beaver Street Hat Band. The resultant album, 'Beaver Street', was available through a website.<ref>{{cite web|url=http://www.hat-band.com |title=The Beaver Street Hat Band – Home |publisher=Hat-band.com |accessdate=2014-06-25}}</ref>

Ife traced the family-tree back to the 16th century, discovering that Ife was an old [Suffolk](/source/Suffolk) word for a [yew](/source/Taxus_baccata) tree.

Ife died of a [heart attack](/source/myocardial_infarction) in November 2013, at the age of 67.<ref>{{cite web|url=http://www.craftweb.org/web/kris/index.html |title=Kris Ife – Now and Then |publisher=Craftweb.org |date=2013-11-08 |accessdate=2014-06-25}}</ref><ref>{{cite web|last=Pinto |first=Laura |url=http://oldiesconnection.wordpress.com/2013/11/10/kris-ife-dies/ |title=British Singer-Songwriter Kris Ife Dies | Laura's Oldies Connection |publisher=Oldiesconnection.wordpress.com |date=2013-11-10 |accessdate=2014-06-25}}</ref>
