Kreis Bergen East German administrative division Rostock County town Bergen auf Rügen Vehicle registration plate A (Bezirk Rostock) Kreis Bergen within Bezirk Rostock

**Kreis Bergen** (district of Bergen) was a *[Kreis](/source/Landkreis)* on the island of [Rügen](/source/R%C3%BCgen) in the district of [Bezirk Rostock](/source/Bezirk_Rostock) in [East Germany](/source/East_Germany) from 1952 to 1955.

## History

After the end of the [Second World War](/source/Second_World_War) the [shire county of Rügen](/source/Landkreis_R%C3%BCgen) (*Landkreis Rügen*), which covered the island of [Rügen](/source/R%C3%BCgen), came under the [Soviet Zone of Occupation](/source/Soviet_Zone_of_Occupation) and was incorporated into the state of [Mecklenburg](https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Land_Mecklenburg&action=edit&redlink=1). On 25 July 1952 there was a comprehensive land reform in [East Germany](/source/East_Germany), in which the states lost their importance and new provinces called *[Bezirke](/source/Administrative_divisions_of_East_Germany)* were formed. Out of the territory of the old county of Rügen the town new counties of Bergen and [Putbus](/source/Kreis_Putbus) were formed.

Because the division of the island of Rügen into two counties soon proved pointless, the counties of Bergen and Putbus were reunited on 1 January 1956 into the [county of Rügen](/source/Kreis_R%C3%BCgen).[1]

## Transport

Kreis Bergen was joined to East Germany's network of trunk roads by the [F96](/source/Bundesstra%C3%9Fe_96) from [Saßnitz](/source/Sassnitz) via Rambin to Berlin. A railway link to the mainland existed in the shape of the line from [Saßnitz via Rambin to Stralsund](/source/Stralsund%E2%80%93Sassnitz_railway). Rail services in the county were also served by the branch lines of [Bergen & Lauterbach Mole](/source/Bergen_auf_R%C3%BCgen%E2%80%93Lauterbach_Mole_railway), [Lietzow & Binz](/source/Lietzow%E2%80%93Binz_railway) and [Bergen & Altenkirchen](/source/R%C3%BCgensche_Kleinbahn).

## Municipalities

Kreis Bergen covered the northern part of the island of Rügen including the islands of [Hiddensee](/source/Hiddensee) and [Ummanz](/source/Ummanz) off its coast and the peninsulas of [Bug](/source/Bug_(R%C3%BCgen)), [Jasmund](/source/Jasmund), [Schaabe](/source/Schaabe) and [Wittow](/source/Wittow).
