The **Koukdjuak River** begins at the outlet of [Nettilling Lake](/source/Nettilling_Lake) and empties into the [Arctic Ocean](/source/Arctic_Ocean). It is the namesake of the [Great Plain of the Koukdjuak](/source/Great_Plain_of_the_Koukdjuak) located in the [Foxe Basin](/source/Foxe_Basin) on western [Baffin Island](/source/Baffin_Island), [Nunavut](/source/Nunavut) (formerly [Northwest Territories](/source/Northwest_Territories)), [northern Canada](/source/Northern_Canada).

The first non-[Inuit](/source/Inuit) who specifically explored the river was the Canadian [Arctic explorer](/source/Arctic_explorer)/[ornithologist](/source/Ornithologist), [J. Dewey Soper](/source/J._Dewey_Soper). The northern boundary of the [Isulijarniq Migratory Bird Sanctuary](/source/Isulijarniq_Migratory_Bird_Sanctuary) is the middle thread of the Koukdjuak River. The river is also notable as a [Barren-ground caribou](/source/Barren-ground_caribou) migration crossing and for [Arctic charr](/source/Arctic_char) fishing.[4]
