The '''Kottenforst''' is a large [forest](/source/forest), about 40 km2 in area, to the south, west and north of the city of [Bonn](/source/Bonn) in Germany. It is part of the [Rhineland Nature Park](/source/Rhineland_Nature_Park) (1,045 km2) and forms its eastern side.

== Geography ==
The Kottenforst is the southern part of a [highland](/source/highland) region that lies about 150 to {{Höhe|180|DE-NHN|link=true}}, and known as the [Ville](/source/Ville_(Rhineland)), which drops steeply towards the east into the [Rhine Valley](/source/Middle_Rhine), but whose western slopes descend more gradually towards the [Swist](/source/Swist) and [Erft](/source/Erft) rivers, forming a geological [half-horst](/source/Horst_(geology)). The part of the [natural region](/source/Handbook_of_the_Natural_Region_Divisions_of_Germany) of Ville, which is not dominated by the [brown coal](/source/brown_coal) mining of the [Rhenish Brown Coal Field](/source/Rhenish_Brown_Coal_Field), is also called ''Waldville''.

The Kottenforst is divided into a southeastern section between [Meckenheim](/source/Meckenheim_(Rhineland)), [Bad Godesberg](/source/Bad_Godesberg) and Bonn, into which areas of natural open country intrude in places, such as the [Katzenlochbach Valley](/source/Katzenlochbach_Valley_(Bonn)), and a northern area between [Heimerzheim](/source/Heimerzheim), [Buschhoven](/source/Buschhoven) and [Alfter](/source/Alfter). Between the two areas lies the village of [Witterschlick](/source/Witterschlick).

The Kottenforst once was the location of [Schloss Herzogsfreude](/source/Schloss_Herzogsfreude), the hunting lodge of [Clemens August of Bavaria](/source/Clemens_August_of_Bavaria), [Prince-Elector and Archbishop of Cologne](/source/Electorate_of_Cologne), who loved to go hunting here and also erected the many avenues in the forest.
