**Kotgarh** is a town and a sub-tehsil[2] in [Kumarsain](/source/Kumarsain) [subdivision](/source/Subdivision_(India)) of [Shimla district](/source/Shimla_district) in the [Indian state](/source/States_and_territories_of_India) of [Himachal Pradesh](/source/Himachal_Pradesh). Formerly under the [British Raj](/source/British_Raj), it was the capital of [Kotkhai](/source/Kotkhai)-Kotgarh [princely state](/source/Princely_state), which was later shifted to Kiari in [Kotkhai](/source/Kotkhai). Kotgarh was incorporated into [British India](/source/Presidencies_and_provinces_of_British_India) in 1815 and later to [India](/source/India) in 1947.

It was in this region, where [Satyanand Stokes](/source/Satyanand_Stokes) planted first American apple tree in India in 1916.[3] Himachal Pradesh is known as the apple bowl as well as fruit bowl of India, due to its high quality of apple and cherry cultivation.[4]
