**Koryak Okrug** (Russian: Корякский округ, IPA: [\[kɐˈrʲakskʲɪj ˈokrʊk\]](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Help:IPA/Russian); [Koryak](/source/Koryak_language): Чав’чываокруг, romanized: *Caw’cywaokrug*), or **Koryakia** ([/kɔːrˈjækiə/](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Help:IPA/English); Russian: Корякия, IPA: [\[kɐˈrʲækʲɪjə\]](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Help:IPA/Russian)), was an administrative division with a special status within [Kamchatka Krai](/source/Kamchatka_Krai), [Russia](/source/Russia).[1] It was a [federal subject](/source/Federal_subjects_of_Russia) of [Russia](/source/Russia) (an [autonomous okrug](/source/Autonomous_okrug) of [Kamchatka Oblast](/source/Kamchatka_Oblast)) from 1931[2] until July 1, 2007, when it merged with Kamchatka Oblast. Prior to the merger, it was called **Koryak Autonomous Okrug** (Russian: Корякский автономный округ). Its [administrative center](/source/Administrative_center) was the [urban locality](/source/Types_of_inhabited_localities_in_Russia) (an [urban-type settlement](/source/Urban-type_settlement)) of [Palana](/source/Palana%2C_Russia). Population: 18,759 ([2010 census](/source/2010_Russian_census));[3] 25,157 ([2002 census](/source/2002_Russian_census));[4] 39,363 ([1989 Soviet census](/source/1989_Soviet_census)).[5]

## Demographics

As of the 2002 census, [Koryaks](/source/Koryaks) constituted about a quarter of the population. At the time, it had the smallest population of all the [federal subjects](/source/Federal_subjects_of_Russia), despite being ranked seventeenth in size, at 301,500 square kilometers (116,400 sq mi), encompassing part of the northern half of [Kamchatka Peninsula](/source/Kamchatka_Peninsula).

About 50.5% of the total population is indigenous, the [Koryaks](/source/Koryaks) being the largest such group. They are, however, outnumbered by the ethnic [Russians](/source/Russians).
