[Kortowiada](/source/Kortowiada), one of the largest higher education students' holidays in Poland, is held annually in and named after Kortowo.

==History==
In 1886, a [Provincial Mental Sanatorium](/source/Provincial_Mental_Sanatorium_Kortau) was established in the settlement. During [World War II](/source/World_War_II), as part of the ''[Aktion T4](/source/Aktion_T4)'', [Nazi Germany](/source/Nazi_Germany) conducted [medical experiments](/source/Nazi_human_experimentation) on the patients of the psychiatric hospital, in which at least 5,000 people were killed.<ref name=rol>{{cite web|url=https://radioolsztyn.pl/dzisiaj-mija-74-rocznica-rzezi-w-kortowie-sowieckie-oddzialy-zamordowaly-okolo-600-osob/01432105|title=Dzisiaj mija 74. rocznica rzezi w Kortowie. committed a massacre of some 600 remaining patients and staff of the psychiatric hospital, who were either burned alive or shot.<ref name=rol/>
