**Korti** or **Kurti** ([Arabic](/source/Arabic_language): كورتي) is a town in northern-central [Sudan](/source/Sudan). In the [Meroitic period](/source/Meroitic_period), the city appeared as Cadetum, Cadata or Coetum in Roman sources.[*[citation needed](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Citation_needed)*] The town lies about 250 kilometres (160 mi) from [Khartoum](/source/Khartoum), on the south side of the [Nile](/source/Nile), at the terminus of the [Wadi Muqaddam](/source/Wadi_Muqaddam). It is also known for being the centre location for the [Shaigiya](/source/Shaigiya_tribe) tribe.

## History

In 1820, the town was the site of a [battle](https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Battle_of_Korti_(1820)&action=edit&redlink=1) between the Shaiqiya and an invading force of [Muhammad Ali Pasha](/source/Muhammad_Ali_of_Egypt). In 1881, the [Mahdist uprising](/source/Mahdist_War) led to Britain sending in an army in August 1884 under [Garnet Wolseley](/source/Garnet_Wolseley) in the so-called [Nile Expedition](/source/Nile_Expedition) to relieve [General Gordon](/source/Charles_George_Gordon). Korti became a rallying point for British troops.[1] In January 1885, a fort was built by British troops on the north side of the Nile, right in front of Korti. From here, the advance on the Nile and through the desert could take place simultaneously. In the fighting in the [Bayuda Desert](/source/Bayuda_Desert) between *Kurti* and [Metemmeh](https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Metemmeh&action=edit&redlink=1) (on the Nile opposite [Shendi](/source/Shendi)), the Mahdist Sudanese suffered a defeat in the [Battle of Abu Klea](/source/Battle_of_Abu_Klea) soon after the base at Korti was built.
