## History

Panorama of Koronowo

In the [Early Middle Ages](/source/Early_Middle_Ages), a [Slavic stronghold](/source/Gr%C3%B3d) was built in present-day Koronowo.[2] It was included into the emerging Polish state in the 10th century and finally integrated with it in the 12th century.[2] In 1288 the [Cistercians](/source/Cistercians) from nearby [Byszewo](/source/Byszewo%2C_Kuyavian-Pomeranian_Voivodeship) founded an [abbey](/source/Abbey) in Koronowo.[2] The settlement prospered due to its location at the intersection of [trade routes](/source/Trade_route) from [Kuyavia](/source/Kuyavia) and [Greater Poland](/source/Greater_Poland) to [Gdańsk](/source/Gda%C5%84sk), and from the [Chełmno Land](/source/Che%C5%82mno_Land) to [Western Pomerania](/source/Pomerania).[2] In 1359 King [Casimir III the Great](/source/Casimir_III_the_Great) vested it with [town privileges](/source/Town_privileges), which however were not implemented[2] until 1370. The name Koronowo comes from the word *korona* ("crown"). Administratively it was located within the [Inowrocław Voivodeship](/source/Inowroc%C5%82aw_Voivodeship) in the [Greater Poland Province](/source/Greater_Poland_Province%2C_Crown_of_the_Kingdom_of_Poland).[3] A significant [battle](/source/Battle_of_Koronowo) took place nearby in 1410 during the [Polish–Lithuanian–Teutonic War](/source/Polish%E2%80%93Lithuanian%E2%80%93Teutonic_War), in which [Poland](/source/Crown_of_the_Kingdom_of_Poland) defeated the [Teutonic Knights](/source/Teutonic_Knights).

King [Casimir IV of Poland](/source/Casimir_IV_of_Poland) by virtue of [privileges](/source/Privilege_(law)) of 1476 and 1484, established two annual [fairs](/source/Fair) and a weekly market.[3] Among the main activities of the population were [crafts](/source/Craft), [pottery](/source/Pottery), [brewing](/source/Brewing) and agriculture.[3] In the 17th and early 18th century Koronowo suffered due to [Swedish](/source/Swedish_Empire) invasions, the [Great Northern War](/source/Great_Northern_War) and epidemics.[3] King [Augustus III of Poland](/source/Augustus_III_of_Poland) established two more annual fairs to help revive the town.[3]

As part of the [First Partition of Poland](/source/First_Partition_of_Poland), Koronowo became part of [Prussia](/source/Kingdom_of_Prussia) in 1772. The town of Koronowo was the administrative seat of the Koronowo district in the newly formed province of [West Prussia](/source/West_Prussia). To distinguish it from the city of [Deutsch Krone (Wałcz)](/source/Wa%C5%82cz), it was called *Polnisch Krone*. From 1807 to 1815, during the [Napoleonic era](/source/Napoleonic_era) it was part of the Polish [Duchy of Warsaw](/source/Duchy_of_Warsaw) and in 1815, after the duchy's dissolution, it fell back to Prussia.

In 1871, the town became part of [Germany](/source/German_Reich). Until the end of [World War I](/source/World_War_I), it was part of the [Bromberg district](/source/Kreis_Bromberg) in the [Prussian](/source/Prussia) [Province of Posen](/source/Province_of_Posen). The narrow-gauge railway from [Bydgoszcz (Bromberg)](/source/Bydgoszcz) was opened in 1895, followed by the standard-gauge railway from [Tuchola (Tuchel)](/source/Tuchola) in 1909–1914. Due to the provisions of the [Versailles Treaty](/source/Treaty_of_Versailles), the town along with the entire Bromberg district had to be ceded by Germany to the [Second Polish Republic](/source/Second_Polish_Republic) in 1919. It was part of the [Poznań Voivodeship](/source/Pozna%C5%84_Voivodeship_(1919%E2%80%931939)) from 1919 to 1938 and of the [Pomeranian Voivodeship](/source/Pomeranian_Voivodeship_(1919%E2%80%931939)) from 1938 to 1939. 620 Jews lived in Koronowo in 1871, and 40 in 1933.[4]

Polish prisoners in [German-occupied](/source/Occupation_of_Poland_(1939%E2%80%931945)) Koronowo ([World War II](/source/World_War_II))

13 Polish soldiers were killed on September 2, 1939, during the German [invasion of Poland](/source/Invasion_of_Poland), which started [World War II](/source/World_War_II).[5] In mid-September 1939, the German *[Einsatzgruppe IV](/source/Einsatzgruppen)* entered the town to commit [atrocities against the population](/source/Nazi_crimes_against_the_Polish_nation).[6] During the [German occupation](/source/Occupation_of_Poland_(1939%E2%80%931945)), the [Polish](/source/Polish_people) population was subject to mass arrests, [expulsions](/source/Expulsion_of_Poles_by_Nazi_Germany) and massacres. The Germans established a prison for Poles,[7] in which 606 people died.[5] Many Polish inhabitants of Koronowo and nearby villages were murdered by the Germans in nearby [Buszkowo](/source/Buszkowo%2C_Bydgoszcz_County) on 5–6 October 1939 and in the forest near Koronowo on 26 October 1939.[8] Among the victims were local merchants, craftsmen and pre-war mayor Maksymilian Talaśka.[8] The Germans burned the bodies of the victims in attempt to cover up the crime.[8] Koronowo was captured by the Soviets in January 1945 and restored to Poland.
