It is the seat of the [Municipality of Komen](/source/Municipality_of_Komen). It is located on the [Karst Plateau](/source/Karst_Plateau) in the [Slovenian Littoral](/source/Slovenian_Littoral).<ref>[http://www.komen.si/ Komen municipal site]</ref>

==Name==
Komen was attested in written sources in 1247 as ''Cominum'' (and as ''Cumin'' in 1255, ''de Cumino'' in 1269, and ''Comein'' in 1526). The name is probably derived from the Slavic common noun ''*komъ'' 'hill, mountain, elevation'. Derivation from the noun ''komin'' 'stove, chimney' is unlikely for accentual reasons.<ref>{{cite book |last1=Snoj |first1=Marko |title=Etimološki slovar slovenskih zemljepisnih imen |date=2009 |publisher=Modrijan |location=Ljubljana |page=197}}</ref> The Italian name, which is derived from the Slovene name, is given as ''Comen'' in older sources<ref name="Leksikon"/><ref name="Gorz"/> and ''Comeno'' in newer sources.<ref name="Atlante"/>

==History==
In the [Middle Ages](/source/Middle_Ages), it was first part of the [Duchy of Friuli](/source/Duchy_of_Friuli) and in the 13th century it was included in the [County of Gorizia](/source/County_of_Gorizia). Komen was first mentioned in a document from 1247. In 1500, the whole region fell under [Habsburg](/source/Habsburg) dominion and it was included in the [County of Gorizia and Gradisca](/source/County_of_Gorizia_and_Gradisca) until 1918. During [World War I](/source/World_War_I), the western parts of the municipality were devastated by the [Battles of the Isonzo](/source/Battles_of_the_Isonzo). After the end of the war in November 1918, the area was occupied by [Italian](/source/Kingdom_of_Italy_(1861-1946)) troops and annexed to [Italy](/source/Italy) with the [Treaty of Rapallo](/source/Treaty_of_Rapallo_(1920)) in 1920. On February 15, 1944, the village of Komen was burned down by the [Nazi German](/source/Nazi_German) troops as retaliation for [Partisan resistance](/source/Partisans_(Yugoslavia)) activity in the area; the surviving inhabitants were forcibly resettled to [Bavaria](/source/Bavaria), from where they only returned after the end of [World War II](/source/World_War_II). In 1947, it became part of [Yugoslavia](/source/Socialist_Federal_Republic_of_Yugoslavia) and in 1991 of independent Slovenia.
