**Knife play** is a form of consensual [BDSM](/source/BDSM) [edgeplay](/source/Edgeplay) involving [knives](/source/Knife), [daggers](/source/Dagger), and [swords](/source/Sword) as a source of physical and mental stimulation.[1]

Knives are typically used to cut away clothing, scratch the skin, remove wax after [wax play](/source/Wax_play), or simply provide sensual stimulation. Knife play can also be a form of [temperature play](/source/Temperature_play) or [body modification](/source/Body_modification).

## Kinky Women Research Study

In 2015, the scientific journal *[Archives of Sexual Behavior](/source/Archives_of_Sexual_Behavior)* published the "Kinky Women Research Study" by author Jennifer Eve Rehor, a San Diego relationship therapist. Rehor conducted the study at [San Francisco State University](/source/San_Francisco_State_University) while in the Human Sexuality Studies graduate program. Rehor surveyed 1,580 women within the kink community and questioned them about 126 sexual behaviors.[2]

A 2015 article in *[Men's Health](/source/Men's_Health)* magazine written by Eric Spitznagel about the kink study stated that, "38 percent like "Knife play," which I’m going to assume means they like being on the receiving end of a knife."[2]
