# Kneria

***Kneria*** is a [genus](/source/Genus) of small [fish](/source/Fish) in the family [Kneriidae](/source/Kneriidae). All the species in this genus are restricted to [Africa](/source/Africa).

Named in honor of [Austrian](/source/Austrians) [ichthyologist](/source/Ichthyologist) [Rudolf Kner](/source/Rudolf_Kner) (1810-1869)[2]

However there is another species, known as the [Southern Kneria](/source/Kneria_sp._nov._'South_Africa') (*Kneria* sp. 'South Africa'),[4] occurring only in the [headwaters](/source/Headwaters) of a few tributaries of the [Crocodile River](/source/Crocodile_River_(Mpumalanga)), in the [Inkomati River](/source/Inkomati_River) system of South Africa.[5] It was initially declared a [Critically Endangered](/source/Critically_Endangered) species on the [IUCN Red List](/source/IUCN_Red_List) in 2007,[4][6] but it was reassessed in 30 November 2016 as Endangered.[7]
