Traditional languages spoken at Klemtu are the southern dialect of the Tsimshian language, called [Southern Tsimshian](/source/Southern_Tsimshian), and Xaixais, a dialect of the [Heiltsuk language](/source/Heiltsuk_language). In religious affiliation, the community is dominated by the [United Church of Canada](/source/United_Church_of_Canada).

The government of the Kitasoo/Xai'xais Nation is a member government of the [Wuikinuxv-Kitasoo Xai’xais-Nuxalk Tribal Council](/source/Wuikinuxv-Kitasoo_Xai%E2%80%99xais-Nuxalk_Tribal_Council).

An alternate older name for Klemtu is '''Kitasoo'''.<ref>{{BCGNIS|47587|Kitasoo}}</ref> it was also known as '''China Hat''' due to the shape of [Cone Island](/source/Cone_Island), which protects it from the open water. The name Klemtu is from the [Coast Tsimshian language](/source/Coast_Tsimshian_language) "Klemdoo-oolk," meaning "impassable".<ref>{{BCGNIS|28410|Klemtu}}</ref>
