They are located near the village of [Gudvangen](/source/Gudvangen) in [Aurland Municipality](/source/Aurland_Municipality) in [Vestland](/source/Vestland) county. 

The waterfall is only about {{convert|8|m}} wide and has a flow of only {{convert|1.42|to|0.42|m3/s}}. There are six drops in the falls.<ref name="wwdb" />  The largest of the three main drops (the one on the left) is officially named ''Kjelfossen'', but is also known as ''Stor Kjelfossen''. The middle falls is known as ''Vetle Kjelfoss'', and the one on the right (and the smallest by volume) is thought to be unnamed.<ref name="wwdb" />  The falls are located just east of [Gudvangen](/source/Gudvangen) at the end of the [Nærøyfjord](/source/N%C3%A6r%C3%B8yfjord). The falls can be seen from the [European route E16](/source/European_route_E16) highway, just west of the entrance into the [Gudvanga Tunnel](/source/Gudvanga_Tunnel). The falls are located about {{convert|18|km}} west of the village of [Flåm](/source/Fl%C3%A5m) and {{convert|27|km}} west of the village of [Aurlandsvangen](/source/Aurlandsvangen).

With a total fall height of {{convert|705|m}}, the waterfall is listed as the 18th tallest waterfall in the world. The tallest single drop is {{convert|198|m}}. The height of the waterfall has never been accurately measured, so there are discrepancies in its actual height.
