==Description==
Kit Mountain is part of the [Chisos Mountains](/source/Chisos_Mountains) where it is set in the [Chihuahuan Desert](/source/Chihuahuan_Desert) and [Big Bend National Park](/source/Big_Bend_National_Park). The mountain is composed chiefly of Burro Mesa Formation tuff (volcanic rock) overlaying [Chisos Formation](/source/Chisos_Formation) which formed 29 million years ago during the [Oligocene](/source/Oligocene) period.<ref name="usgs">[https://pubs.usgs.gov/circ/1327/pdf/Circular_1327.pdf Gray, J.E., ''Geological, Geochemical, and Geophysical Studies by the U.S. Geological Survey in Big Bend National Park, Texas''], U.S. Geological Survey Circular 1327, p. 9, Retrieved 2024-11-21.</ref> Based on the [Köppen climate classification](/source/K%C3%B6ppen_climate_classification), the mountain is located in a [hot arid climate](/source/hot_arid_climate) zone with hot summers and mild winters.<ref name=KGcc2007>{{Cite Köppen-Geiger cc 2007}}</ref> This climate supports plants on the slopes such as [live oak](/source/live_oak), juniper, piñon pine, and grasses.<ref name=TSHA>[https://www.tshaonline.org/handbook/entries/kit-mountain ''Kit Mountain''], Texas State Historical Association, Retrieved 2024-11-21.</ref> Any scant precipitation runoff from the peak's slopes drains to the [Rio Grande](/source/Rio_Grande) which is seven miles to the southwest. [Topographic relief](/source/Topographic_relief) is significant as the summit rises {{convert|900.|ft|m}} above the surrounding terrain in one-half mile (0.8 km). The mountain's toponym has been officially adopted by the [United States Board on Geographic Names](/source/United_States_Board_on_Geographic_Names),<ref name="gnis"/> and has been listed in publications since at least 1912.<ref>[https://books.google.com/books?id=giB0xxDIM-8C&pg=RA3-PA316&dq=Kit+Mountain+texas&hl=en&newbks=1&newbks_redir=0&sa=X&ved=2ahUKEwiX4pqy1O6JAxUVIUQIHXm3O8AQuwV6BAgMEAY#v=onepage&q=Kit%20Mountain%20texas&f=false ''Bulletin of the University of Texas, Number 246,''], William B. Phillips, September 8, 1912, p. 316.</ref> The [kit fox](/source/kit_fox) is a rarely seen nocturnal desert mammal in Big Bend National Park.<ref>[https://www.nps.gov/bibe/learn/nature/animals.htm ''Animals - Big Bend National Park''], National Park Service, Retrieved 2024-11-21.</ref>
