Prior to joining the [philosophy department](/source/New_York_University_Department_of_Philosophy) of NYU in 1997, he taught at the [University of Edinburgh](/source/University_of_Edinburgh), [University of California, Irvine](/source/University_of_California%2C_Irvine), [University of Michigan](/source/University_of_Michigan) and [UCLA](/source/UCLA). The author of multiple books and over 100 articles in international academic journals, he has made notable contributions to the fields of [philosophical logic](/source/philosophical_logic), [metaphysics](/source/metaphysics), and the [philosophy of language](/source/philosophy_of_language) and also has written on [ancient philosophy](/source/ancient_philosophy), in particular on [Aristotle](/source/Aristotle)'s account of logic and [modality](/source/Modal_logic).

After graduating from [Balliol College, Oxford](/source/Balliol_College%2C_Oxford) (B.A. in Philosophy, Politics, and Economics, 1967), Fine received his Ph.D. from the [University of Warwick](/source/University_of_Warwick) in 1969, under the supervision of [A. N. Prior](/source/A._N._Prior). He then taught at the [University of Edinburgh](/source/University_of_Edinburgh), [University of California, Irvine](/source/University_of_California%2C_Irvine), [University of Michigan](/source/University_of_Michigan), and [UCLA](/source/UCLA), before moving to [New York University](/source/New_York_University) as the Silver Professor and University Professor of Philosophy and Mathematics.
