==Geography==
It covers an [area](/source/area) of {{convert|69.19|km2|sqmi|2|abbr=on}} and has a population of 7020 people (2012).
== History ==

Following the [Ottoman](/source/Ottoman_Empire) occupation of [Hungary](/source/Ottoman_Hungary), the settlement went extinct, and became pastureland belonging to [Szeged](/source/Szeged).
The town started to reform in 1747 when a post office, feasting hall (a "''[Csárda](/source/Cs%C3%A1rda)''"), and seven small homes popped up along the road to [Kiskunfélegyháza](/source/Kiskunf%C3%A9legyh%C3%A1za).
The more significant reconstruction of the town had an unusual motivation. The road connecting [Budapest](/source/Budapest) with Szeged carried large amounts of post, and couriers often fell prey to [bandits](/source/Banditry) in the pasturelands around Kistelek. The government tried to alleviate this problem by asking Szeged to sell these pasturelands, and send settlers. The local government in Szeged eventually managed to find 100 families, mostly from the region of [Mátra](/source/M%C3%A1tra), to settle the town.[{{Cite web |title=Csongrádvármegye története II. In 1989 Kistelek was granted town status. Today, the town functions as the economic, educational, medical, and administrative centre for the surrounding villages of [Baks](/source/Baks), [Balástya](/source/Bal%C3%A1stya), [Csengele](/source/Csengele), [Ópusztaszer](/source/%C3%93pusztaszer), and [Pusztaszer](/source/Pusztaszer).

In 2023, the town's total population was 7039. As of the 2022 national census the town was 90.5% [Hungarian](/source/Hungarians), 0.9% [Gypsy](/source/Romani_people), and 2.5% of non-European origin.
