**Kireyevsk** ([Russian](/source/Russian_language): Кире́евск) is a [town](/source/Types_of_inhabited_localities_in_Russia) and the [administrative center](/source/Administrative_center) of [Kireyevsky District](/source/Kireyevsky_District) in [Tula Oblast](/source/Tula_Oblast), [Russia](/source/Russia), located on the [Olen River](https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Olen_River&action=edit&redlink=1), 40 kilometers (25 mi) southeast of [Tula](/source/Tula%2C_Russia), the administrative center of the [oblast](/source/Oblast). Population: 25,557 ([2010 census](/source/2010_Russian_census));[3] 26,284 ([2002 census](/source/2002_Russian_census));[8] 30,503 ([1989 Soviet census](/source/1989_Soviet_census)).[9]

## History

It has been known since the second half of the 18th century as the [Cossack](/source/Cossacks) village of **Kireyevskaya** (Кире́евская).[*[citation needed](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Citation_needed)*] [Iron ore](/source/Iron_ore) deposits started to be developed in the 19th century. During the [Soviet](/source/Soviet_Union) times, the village was granted [urban-type settlement](/source/Urban-type_settlement) status and renamed **Kireyevka** (Кире́евка).[*[citation needed](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Citation_needed)*] It was granted town status and renamed Kireyevsk in 1956.[*[citation needed](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Citation_needed)*]

## Administrative and municipal status

Within the [framework of administrative divisions](/source/Subdivisions_of_Russia#Administrative_divisions), Kireyevsk serves as the [administrative center](/source/Administrative_center) of [Kireyevsky District](/source/Kireyevsky_District).[1] As an administrative division, it is incorporated within Kireyevsky District as **Kireyevsk [Town Under District Jurisdiction](/source/Town_of_district_significance)**.[2] As a [municipal division](/source/Subdivisions_of_Russia#Municipal_divisions), Kireyevsk Town Under District Jurisdiction, together with [Oktyabrsky Rural Okrug](https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Oktyabrsky_Rural_Okrug,_Kireyevsky_District,_Tula_Oblast&action=edit&redlink=1) of Kireyevsky District (which comprises three [rural localities](/source/Types_of_inhabited_localities_in_Russia)), is incorporated within Kireyevsky Municipal District as **Kireyevsk Urban Settlement**.[5]
