Kirabo** "**Bo**" **Jackson** is an American economist who is Abraham Harris Professor of Education and Social Policy and Professor of Economics at [Northwestern University](/source/Northwestern_University), a Fellow at the [Institute for Policy Research](/source/Northwestern_University_Institute_for_Policy_Research), and a Faculty Research Fellow at the [National Bureau of Economic Research](/source/National_Bureau_of_Economic_Research).[1] He previously served as co-editor at *[Journal of Human Resources](/source/Journal_of_Human_Resources)* and is currently on leave as Editor in Chief of the [American Economic Journal: Economic Policy](/source/American_Economic_Journal:_Economic_Policy).[2] In 2020, he was elected to the [National Academy of Education](/source/National_Academy_of_Education) and was awarded the [David N. Kershaw Award](/source/David_N._Kershaw_Award) and Prize for contributions to the field of public policy analysis and management from the [Association for Public Policy Analysis and Management](/source/Association_for_Public_Policy_Analysis_and_Management) (APPAM).[3][4] In 2022 he was elected to the [American Academy of Arts and Sciences](/source/American_Academy_of_Arts_and_Sciences) which honors the excellence and leadership of exceptional people from all disciplines and practices.[\[1\]](https://www.sesp.northwestern.edu/news-center/news/2022/05/kirabo-jackson-elected-to-american-academy-of-arts-and-sciences.ht)[dead link] In August, 2023, Jackson joined President Biden's three-member [Council of Economic Advisers](/source/Council_of_Economic_Advisers).[5] ## Education and early life Jackson is the son of an economist, and was born in 1980 in [Hinsdale, Illinois](/source/Hinsdale,_Illinois).[6] He grew up in the United States, [the Caribbean](/source/Caribbean), [Tanzania](/source/Tanzania), and [Sierra Leone](/source/Sierra_Leone) before earning a bachelor's degree in ethics, politics, and economics from [Yale University](/source/Yale_University) in 2002 and a PhD in economics from [Harvard University](/source/Harvard_University) in 2007.[7][4] Jackson's Jamaican father, Clement, was the first director of the Planning Institute of Jamaica. His mother June Jackson, a native of Trinidad & Tobago, was a lecturer at the [University of Technology](/source/University_of_Technology,_Jamaica). [8] ## Career Jackson began his teaching career as assistant professor in the [School of Industrial and Labor Relations](/source/Cornell_University_School_of_Industrial_and_Labor_Relations) at [Cornell University](/source/Cornell_University) before moving to Northwestern in 2010. He was awarded tenure at Northwestern University in 2012.[9] His research has focused on teacher labor markets and determinants of student success beyond test scores.
