**Kimovsk** ([Russian](/source/Russian_language): Ки́мовск) is a [town](/source/Types_of_inhabited_localities_in_Russia) and the [administrative center](/source/Administrative_center) of [Kimovsky District](/source/Kimovsky_District) in [Tula Oblast](/source/Tula_Oblast), [Russia](/source/Russia), located at the [watershed](/source/Drainage_basin) of the [Don](/source/Don_River_(Russia)) and [Volga Rivers](/source/Volga_River), 77 kilometers (48 mi) southeast of [Tula](/source/Tula%2C_Russia), the administrative center of the [oblast](/source/Oblast). Population: 28,485 ([2010 census](/source/2010_Russian_census));[3] 33,169 ([2002 census](/source/2002_Russian_census));[9] 38,294 ([1989 Soviet census](/source/1989_Soviet_census)).[10]

## History

The village of **Mikhaylovka** (Михайловка) has been known since the 17th century.[*[citation needed](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Citation_needed)*] It developed during the [Great Patriotic War](/source/Great_Patriotic_War) of 1941 to 1945 in connection with intensive [coal](/source/Coal) exploitation at the [Moscow Coal Basin](https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Moscow_Coal_Basin&action=edit&redlink=1). The [Soviets](/source/Soviet_Union) built numerous mines on the lands of a [kolkhoz](/source/Kolkhoz) called *[Young Communist International](/source/Young_Communist_International)* ([Russian](/source/Russian_language): **К**оммунистический **и**нтернационал **м**олодёжи, abbreviated as [Russian](/source/Russian_language): КИМ, or *KIM*) and a habitat for miners. It was granted [work-settlement](/source/Urban-type_settlement) status and given its present name in 1948; town status was granted to it in 1952.[*[citation needed](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Citation_needed)*]

## Administrative and municipal status

Within the [framework of administrative divisions](/source/Subdivisions_of_Russia#Administrative_divisions), Kimovsk serves as the [administrative center](/source/Administrative_center) of [Kimovsky District](/source/Kimovsky_District).[1] As an administrative division, it is incorporated within Kimovsky District as **Kimovsk [Town Under District Jurisdiction](/source/Town_of_district_significance)**.[2] As a [municipal division](/source/Subdivisions_of_Russia#Municipal_divisions), Kimovsk Town Under District Jurisdiction is incorporated within Kimovsky Municipal District as **Kimovsk Urban Settlement**.[5]

## Transportation

Bus station and railway station share a building. Bus routes originating from Kimovsk include [Moscow](/source/Moscow), [Tula](/source/Tula%2C_Russia), [Ryazan](/source/Ryazan), [Novomoskovsk](/source/Novomoskovsk%2C_Russia), [Uzlovaya](/source/Uzlovaya), and other destinations.

## Culture

There is a museum of local lore in Kimovsk. The Memorial of the [Great Patriotic War](/source/Great_Patriotic_War_(term)) is located on the outskirts of Karachevsky forest.
