**Kimch'aek** (Korean pronunciation: [\[kim.tsʰɛk̚\]](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Help:IPA/Korean)), formerly **Sŏngjin** ([Chosŏn'gŭl](/source/Chos%C5%8Fn'g%C5%ADl): 성진, [Hancha](/source/Hancha): 城津), is a city in [North Hamgyong](/source/North_Hamgyong) Province, [North Korea](/source/North_Korea). It was an open port in 1899.[1] It has a population of 207,699.

## Etymology

The city received its current name in 1951 during the [Korean War](/source/Korean_War), in honor of the [Korean People's Army](/source/Korean_People's_Army) (KPA) general, [Kim Chaek](/source/Kim_Chaek).[1] It was known as Jōshin during [Japanese rule](/source/Korea_under_Japanese_rule) between 1910 and 1945.

## Climate

Kimchaek has a hot-summer [humid continental climate](/source/Humid_continental_climate) ([Köppen climate classification](/source/K%C3%B6ppen_climate_classification): *Dwa*).[2]

## Economy

Kimchaek is an important port on the [Sea of Japan](/source/Sea_of_Japan) (East Sea of Korea), and is home to an [ironworks](/source/Ironworks) and the [Kimch’aek Polytechnic Institute](https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Kimch%E2%80%99aek_Polytechnic_Institute&action=edit&redlink=1).[1]

## Transport

Kimchaek is on the [Pyongra Line](/source/Pyongra_Line) [railway](/source/Railway).

The city has one trolleybus line, with a length of 9.1 km, running from Songnam-dong to Haksong-dong with the depot located in Sinpyong-dong.[7][8]

## Sport

[Wolmido Sports Club](/source/Wolmido_Sports_Club), affiliated with the [Ministry of Culture and Fine Arts of North Korea](https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Ministry_of_Culture_and_Fine_Arts_of_North_Korea&action=edit&redlink=1),[9] play at the [Kimchaek Municipal Stadium](/source/Kimchaek_Municipal_Stadium), which has a capacity of 30,000. The men's team plays in the [DPR Korea Premier Football League](/source/DPR_Korea_League), whilst the [women's team](/source/Wolmido_Sports_Club) plays in the [DPR Korea Women's League](/source/DPR_Korea_Women's_League).
