**Kilverstone** is a village and [civil parish](/source/Civil_parish) in [Norfolk](/source/Norfolk), England.

Kilverstone is located 1.3 miles (2.1 km) north-east of [Thetford](/source/Thetford) and 26 miles (42 km) south-west of [Norwich](/source/Norwich).

## History

Kilverstone's name is of [Viking](/source/Vikings) origin and derives from the [Old Norse](/source/Old_Norse) for *Kilvert's* farmstead.[1]

In the [Domesday Book](/source/Domesday_Book), Kilverstone is listed as a settlement of 18 households in the [hundred](/source/Hundred_(county_division)) of Shropham. In 1086, the village was divided between the [East Anglian](/source/East_Anglia) estates of [King William I](/source/William_the_Conqueror) and [Robert Malet](/source/Robert_Malet).[2]

During the 1840s, Kilverstone Heath was the scene of temporary wooden housing for [navvies](/source/Navvies) working on the railway.[3] During the [Second World War](/source/Second_World_War), a Type 22 Pillbox was built at the level crossing to defend Kilverstone against a possible [German](/source/Nazi_Germany) invasion.[4]

## St. Andrew's Church

Kilverstone's parish church is dedicated to [Saint Andrew](/source/Saint_Andrew) and dates from the 12th century, being one of Norfolk's 124 remaining [round-tower churches](/source/Round-tower_church). St. Andrew's is located on Kilverstone Road and has been Grade II listed since 1958.[6] The church remains open for Sunday service once a month.[7]

St. Andrew's features a stained-glass window designed by [Leonard Walker](/source/Leonard_Walker) and a set of royal arms from the reign of [King George I](/source/George_I_of_Great_Britain).[8]

## Kilverstone Hall

Kilverstone Hall was built in the 17th century in the [Jacobean style](/source/Jacobean_architecture) for Thomas Wright. The house was subsequently bought by [Josiah Vavasseur](/source/Josiah_Vavasseur), an executive at [Armstrong Whitworth](/source/Armstrong_Whitworth), who sold the home to the family of [Admiral John Fisher, 1st Baron Fisher](/source/John_Fisher%2C_1st_Baron_Fisher).[9][10]
