Kilitbahir Castle

**Kilitbahir Castle** ([Turkish](/source/Turkish_language): *Kilitbahir Kalesi*) is a [fortress](/source/Fortress) on the west side of the [Dardanelles](/source/Dardanelles), opposite the city of [Çanakkale](/source/%C3%87anakkale), where there is a corresponding fortress (*[Kale-i Sultaniye](/source/%C3%87imenlik_Castle)*), from which Çanakkale takes its name. The two castles were constructed by [Fatih Sultan Mehmet](/source/Fatih_Sultan_Mehmet) in 1463 to control the straits at their narrowest point. Kilitbahir's name, meaning "lock of the sea", reflects this defensive purpose.[1] Due to the [protracted siege](/source/Siege_of_Candia) against [Candia](/source/Heraklion), the castle and [Kale-i Sultaniye](/source/Kale-i_Sultaniye) were repaired in order to fortify the Dardanelles.[2]
