**Kidd's Beach** is a small [coastal resort town](/source/Coastal_resort_town) in the [Eastern Cape](/source/Eastern_Cape), [South Africa](/source/South_Africa) situated on the [Mkhanzi River](https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Mkhanzi_River&action=edit&redlink=1) about 28 kilometres from [East London](/source/East_London%2C_Eastern_Cape), South Africa.[2] The name "Mkhanzi" is derived from the Xhosa word "umkhanzi", which means "bulrush", or *[Typha capensis](/source/Typha_capensis)*.[3] Kidd's Beach was named after [Charles Kidd](https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Charles_Kidd_(mayor)&action=edit&redlink=1), who was the mayor of nearby [King William's Town](/source/King_William's_Town) in the 1860s.[4]
