'''Kidal Cercle''' is an administrative subdivision of the [Kidal Region](/source/Kidal_Region) of [Mali](/source/Mali). The administrative center ''([chef-lieu](/source/chef-lieu))'' is the town of [Kidal](/source/Kidal). The [cercle](/source/Cercles_of_Mali) is divided into rural and urban [communes](/source/Communes_of_Mali), and below this, quarters/villages. In 2009 the cercle had a population of 33,087.<ref name=pop2009/>

The climate is typical Saharian with very little rainfall and large fluctuations in temperature. The average annual rainfall is around 130&nbsp;mm but there are large year-to-year variations with 204&nbsp;mm recorded in 1999 and only 66&nbsp;mm in 1990.<ref name=precaged/>

The mountain region of [Adrar des Ifoghas](/source/Adrar_des_Ifoghas) was [taken](/source/Battle_of_Ifoghas) by French and Chadian forces on 22 February 2013 as part of the [Northern Mali conflict](/source/Northern_Mali_conflict_(2012%E2%80%93present)). The area of In Arab, near [Anefif](/source/Anefif), was [captured](/source/Battle_of_In_Arab) by [MNLA](/source/National_Movement_for_the_Liberation_of_Azawad) forces on 29–30 March 2013.
