**Kevin Trainor** is an Irish[1] actor of stage and screen.

## Early life

From [Kilkeel](/source/Kilkeel), [County Down](/source/County_Down), [Northern Ireland](/source/Northern_Ireland), Trainor attended [St Colman's College](/source/St_Colman's_College,_Newry) in [Newry](/source/Newry), where he was a close contemporary of fellow actor [Michael Legge](/source/Michael_Legge_(actor)), before attending [Emmanuel College, Cambridge](/source/Emmanuel_College,_Cambridge), where he read English. After Cambridge, Trainor trained at the [Royal Academy of Dramatic Art](/source/Royal_Academy_of_Dramatic_Art) from 2001 to 2004.

## Career

Making an early cameo appearance in the 2001 film *[The Hole](/source/The_Hole_(2001_film))* while at RADA, he also appeared in the 2005 [Royal Shakespeare Company](/source/Royal_Shakespeare_Company) season.

He is notable for portraying the younger version of [Trevor Bruttenholm](/source/Trevor_Bruttenholm) (played as an older man by [John Hurt](/source/John_Hurt)) in the film *[Hellboy](/source/Hellboy_(2004_film))*; as the character John in *[The Catherine Tate Show](/source/The_Catherine_Tate_Show)* (from the ["Ulster Mum" series of sketches](/source/The_Catherine_Tate_Show_characters#John_Reilly.27s_Mum)); as [Charles Adams](/source/Charles_Adams_(1770%E2%80%931800)) in the [HBO](/source/HBO) [miniseries](/source/Miniseries) *[John Adams](/source/John_Adams_(miniseries))*; and as "[living statue](/source/Living_statue)" Keiran Barker in Sky 1 television comedy-drama *[The Café](/source/The_Caf%C3%A9_(British_TV_series))*.

Trainor earned critical accolades for his appearance in the special flash-back [episode](/source/List_of_Utopia_episodes) that launched the 2014 second series of [Channel 4's](/source/Channel_4) *[Utopia](/source/Utopia_(UK_TV_series))*. His performance as Mr Omida, an immaculate and punctilious torturer, was described by [Metro](/source/Metro_(British_newspaper)) as *"the most chilling torturer committed to screen in a long time"*[2] and by [Geeks Unleashed](/source/Geeks_Unleashed) as *"the very neat, precise and sinister Mr Omida, who wins the creepiest man alive award"*.[3] Kevin also appeared in the documentary drama 'Titanic: Birth of a Legend' as Alfred Cunningham, apprentice fitter.

In 2008, Trainor appeared as Moth to [Peter Bowles's](/source/Peter_Bowles) Don Armado in [Sir Peter Hall's](/source/Peter_Hall_(director)) *[Love's Labour's Lost](/source/Love's_Labour's_Lost)* at the [Rose Theatre, Kingston](/source/Rose_Theatre,_Kingston).

Trainor played Jonesy, a [savant](/source/Savant_syndrome) with [pervasive developmental disorder](/source/Pervasive_developmental_disorder) in the first production of *Lost Monsters* by [Laurence Wilson](/source/Laurence_Wilson_(playwright)) at the [Everyman Theatre, Liverpool](/source/Everyman_Theatre,_Liverpool) in 2009.[4]

In 2010, he played Trent Conway in *[Six Degrees of Separation](/source/Six_Degrees_of_Separation_(play))* at [the Old Vic, London](/source/The_Old_Vic). In the same year Trainor took a leading role in [Jonathan Harvey](/source/Jonathan_Harvey_(playwright))'s new play, *Canary*, in the [Hampstead Theatre](/source/Hampstead_Theatre) and on tour. His character was unrepentant gay man *avant la lettre* and campaigner, Billy, whose life as portrayed spans the modern period of [gay liberation](/source/Gay_liberation) in [Great Britain](/source/Great_Britain). Billy's initial betrayal at the hands of his [closeted](/source/Coming_out) lover and, later, that of society in the form of [committal](/source/Involuntary_commitment) for [aversion therapy](/source/Aversion_therapy), leads ultimately to the character's imprisonment when he kills his treating doctor in an encounter in a gay bar. Harvey offers this as a reminder to his audience of the numerous hopeless casualties of the struggle for [gay rights](/source/LGBT_rights_by_country_or_territory).[5][6] Trainor himself has spoken of his pride in being centrally involved in such a *"campaigning piece"*.[7]

In 2011, Trainor starred as [Bertie Wooster](/source/Bertie_Wooster) in the revival of *[By Jeeves](/source/By_Jeeves)*, a musical by [Andrew Lloyd Webber](/source/Andrew_Lloyd_Webber) and [Alan Ayckbourn](/source/Alan_Ayckbourn), at the [Landor Theatre](/source/Landor_Theatre) in [Clapham](/source/Clapham), London. He was off-stage for just thirty seconds during the performance. Later in the year, he returned to the Old Vic to play a *"strapping"* Shawn Keogh in *[Playboy of the Western World](/source/Playboy_of_the_Western_World)* directed by [John Crowley](/source/John_Crowley_(director)).[8]

Trainor returned to his native Northern Ireland in 2012 to appear in the ensemble play *Titanic (Scenes from the British Wreck Commissioner's Inquiry 1912)* by [Owen McCafferty](/source/Owen_McCafferty) at the new [MAC Theatre](/source/MAC_Theatre) in [Belfast](/source/Belfast).

In 2013, Trainor starred as [Faustus](/source/Faust) opposite [Siobhan Redmond's](/source/Siobhan_Redmond) [Mephistopheles](/source/Mephistopheles) in [Marlowe's](/source/Christopher_Marlowe) *[Doctor Faustus](/source/Doctor_Faustus_(play))* in an *avant-garde* co-production between Glasgow's [Citizens Theatre](/source/Citizens_Theatre) and the Leeds [West Yorkshire Playhouse](/source/West_Yorkshire_Playhouse). New scenes were written to complement Marlowe's incomplete text by Irish playwright [Colin Teevan](/source/Colin_Teevan).[9]
