== Biography ==
Born in [Montreal](/source/Montreal), Gilbert studied at the [Conservatoire de musique du Québec à Montréal](/source/Conservatoire_de_musique_du_Qu%C3%A9bec_%C3%A0_Montr%C3%A9al) under [Yvonne Hubert](/source/Yvonne_Hubert) (piano) and [Gabriel Cusson](/source/Gabriel_Cusson) (harmony and counterpoint). He also studied the organ with [Conrad Letendre](/source/Conrad_Letendre) in Montréal. In 1953 he won the [Prix d'Europe](/source/Prix_d'Europe) for organ performance, an award which enabled him to pursue studies in Paris with [Nadia Boulanger](/source/Nadia_Boulanger) (composition), [Maurice Duruflé](/source/Maurice_Durufl%C3%A9) (organ), [Ruggero Gerlin](/source/Ruggero_Gerlin) (harpsichord), [Gaston Litaize](/source/Gaston_Litaize) (organ), and [Sylvie Spicket](/source/Sylvie_Spicket) (harpsichord) from 1953 to 1955. He later studied the harpsichord privately under [Wanda Landowska](/source/Wanda_Landowska).

Gilbert made his first recordings with the Canadian label Baroque Records Co. of Canada Ltd. in 1962 – an all-J. S. Bach program, followed by several more solo harpsichord recordings of music by Bach, another of Rameau, and several chamber music albums with other Canadian artists: Mario Duschenes (flute & recorder), Steven Staryk (violin), Jacques Simard (oboe), as well as French flautist [Jean-Pierre Rampal](/source/Jean-Pierre_Rampal). As organist, he recorded an album of works by Boehm, Buxtehude and Walther on two [Casavant](/source/Casavant_Fr%C3%A8res)-built instruments in Quebec. (All of these recordings were subsequently reissued on Orion Master Recordings in the U.S.) In 1983 he recorded a two-CD selection from the Montreal Organ Book on the [Hellmuth Wolff](/source/Hellmuth_Wolff_(organ_builder)) organ at [McGill University](/source/McGill_University) for the Canadian label Analekta.
