Yeager attended [San José State University](/source/San_Jos%C3%A9_State_University), where he earned a B.A. in political science. He went on to [Stanford University](/source/Stanford_University), earning an M.A. in sociology, and a Ph.D. in education from the [Stanford Graduate School of Education](/source/Stanford_Graduate_School_of_Education). In 2004, Yeager completed Harvard University's [John F. Yeager served on [San Jose City Council](/source/San_Jose_City_Council) from his election in November 2000 until March 2004, when he was re-elected for a second term<ref name="SCCGOV"/> that lasted until 2006.
