**Kells Upper** or **Upper Kells** () is a [historical barony](/source/Barony_(Ireland)) in western [County Meath](/source/County_Meath), Ireland.

Baronies were mainly [cadastral](/source/Cadastre) rather than administrative units. They acquired modest local taxation and spending functions in the 19th century before being superseded by the [Local Government (Ireland) Act 1898](/source/Local_Government_(Ireland)_Act_1898).[1]

## History

Prior to the [Norman invasion of Ireland](/source/Norman_invasion_of_Ireland), the Kells Upper area was part of the territory of the [Ciannachta](/source/Ciannachta). The barony of Kells existed before 1542 in the [Lordship of Meath](/source/Lordship_of_Meath); it took its name from the town of [Kells](/source/Kells,_County_Meath). [2][3] Kells was divided into [Lower](/source/Kells_Lower) (northern) and Upper (southern) halves by 1807.[4]

## Geography

Kells Upper is in the west of the county, with the [Kells Blackwater](/source/Kells_Blackwater) river flowing across it. It has borders with [Westmeath](/source/Westmeath) to the southwest and [County Cavan](/source/County_Cavan) to the northwest.[5]
