As a player, he was a [defender](/source/defender_(association_football)) who notably played in the [Premier League](/source/Premier_League) for [Coventry City](/source/Coventry_City_F.C.) and [West Ham United](/source/West_Ham_United_F.C.). He also played in the [Football League](/source/Football_League) for [AFC Bournemouth](/source/AFC_Bournemouth), [Queens Park Rangers](/source/Queens_Park_Rangers_F.C.), [Luton Town](/source/Luton_Town_F.C.), [Chesterfield](/source/Chesterfield_F.C.) and [Barnet](/source/Barnet_F.C.), as well as with non-league sides [Hornchurch](/source/Hornchurch_F.C.), [Redbridge](/source/Redbridge_F.C.) and [Welling United](/source/Welling_United_F.C.). ==Club career==
Rowland was signed by [AFC Bournemouth](/source/AFC_Bournemouth) manager [Harry Redknapp](/source/Harry_Redknapp), making his league debut appearance against [Darlington](/source/Darlington_F.C.) on 17 August 1991. He had two loan spells away from ''The Cherries'' at [Farnborough Town](/source/Farnborough_Town_F.C.) and at [Coventry City](/source/Coventry_City) where he made two substitute appearances.

In January 1998 Rowland moved to [Queens Park Rangers](/source/Queens_Park_Rangers_F.C.) (QPR) along with [Iain Dowie](/source/Iain_Dowie) as part of the deal which saw [Trevor Sinclair](/source/Trevor_Sinclair) move to [Upton Park](/source/Boleyn_Ground).<ref name="WHUstats" /> Rowland made his QPR debut in January 1998 against [Stockport County](/source/Stockport_County_F.C.) and went on to make 56 league appearances, scoring three goals.

He stayed at the QPR until August 2001, which included a period on loan, at Luton Town, before moving to Chesterfield on a free transfer.

He made only 12 appearances for Chesterfield before signing for Barnet in March 2003. The summer of 2003 saw Rowland's final [Football League](/source/The_Football_League) appearance before he made his move into [non-League football](/source/non-League_football).

==International career==
Rowland gained 19 caps for [Northern Ireland](/source/Northern_Ireland_national_football_team) scoring one goal in a 1–0 win against [Finland](/source/Finland_national_football_team) on 10 October 1998. He was first capped whilst with West Ham making his international debut on 8 September 1993 against [Latvia](/source/Finland_national_football_team). His final game came on 9 May 1999 in a 1–0 win against [Ireland](/source/Republic_of_Ireland_national_football_team).<ref name="NIstats"/>

==Coaching career==
