He was born in [Oldham](/source/Oldham) and died in [Portsmouth](/source/Portsmouth). He appeared in 124 [first-class matches](/source/first-class_cricket) as a righthanded [batsman](/source/batting_(cricket)) and [wicketkeeper](/source/wicketkeeper), but was a regular player in the first team for only three seasons, from 1965 to 1967.
