# Keith Darvill

**Keith Ernest Darvill** (born 28 May 1948) is a [Labour](/source/Labour_Party_(UK)) politician in the [United Kingdom](/source/United_Kingdom). He is a councillor in the [London Borough of Havering](/source/London_Borough_of_Havering).

## Early life

Darvill was educated at Norlington School in the [London Borough of Waltham Forest](/source/London_Borough_of_Waltham_Forest), in East London and at the [Polytechnic of Central London](/source/Polytechnic_of_Central_London) school of Law after which he worked as a [solicitor](/source/Solicitor).

## Member of Parliament

Darvill was elected as [Labour](/source/Labour_Party_(UK)) [Member of Parliament](/source/Member_of_Parliament_(United_Kingdom)) for [Upminster](/source/Upminster_(UK_Parliament_constituency)) at the [1997 election](/source/1997_United_Kingdom_general_election), taking it from the [Conservatives](/source/Conservative_Party_(UK)), and was one of the few Labour MPs to lose their seat at the [2001 election](/source/2001_United_Kingdom_general_election) to the Conservatives, in the person of [Angela Watkinson](/source/Angela_Watkinson). Darvill stood once again in Upminster, [Labour's](/source/Labour_Party_(UK)) sixth target, at the [May 2005 general election](/source/2005_United_Kingdom_general_election), but failed to regain the seat.

## Havering politics

Darvill was elected to [Havering Council](/source/Havering_London_Borough_Council) from the ward of [Heaton](/source/Heaton_(Havering_ward)) at the [2002 election](/source/2002_Havering_London_Borough_Council_election).[2] He unsuccessfully stood for the [London Assembly](/source/London_Assembly) seat of [Havering and Redbridge](/source/Havering_and_Redbridge_(London_Assembly_constituency)) at the [2004 election](/source/2004_London_Assembly_election). He was narrowly re-elected at the [2006 election](/source/2006_Havering_London_Borough_Council_election) when Labour was almost wiped out in the borough.[3] Following the [2010 election](/source/2010_Havering_London_Borough_Council_election) Labour increased its council group to 5 and Darvill was elected Labour group leader on the council.[4] As a result of the [2022 election](/source/2022_Havering_London_Borough_Council_election) Darvill retained his role as leader of the Labour group and was appointed cabinet member for climate change as part of a coalition deal he helped to negotiate between the Labour Party and the [Havering Residents Association](/source/Havering_Residents_Association).[5] The coalition collapsed in 2024.[6]

## Personal life

He lives in [Upminster](/source/Upminster) with his wife Julia, he has three children and seven grandchildren.
