**Keith Frederick Chater** [FRS](/source/Fellow_of_the_Royal_Society)[1] (born 23 April 1944) is a British [microbiologist](/source/Microbiologist), formerly head of the departments of Genetics and [Molecular Microbiology](/source/Molecular_biology) at the [John Innes Centre](/source/John_Innes_Centre). He has held honorary professorships at the [University of East Anglia](/source/University_of_East_Anglia), [Huazhong Agricultural University](/source/Huazhong_Agricultural_University), and the [Chinese Academy of Sciences](/source/Chinese_Academy_of_Sciences) Institute of Microbiology.

## Career

Chater studied for a PhD at the [University of Birmingham](/source/University_of_Birmingham) working on the genetics of methionine biosynthesis in *[Salmonella](/source/Salmonella)*.

## Career and research

He joined the John Innes Centre in 1969 and began working with [David Hopwood](/source/David_Hopwood). His group studied the complex life cycle of *[Streptomyces](/source/Streptomyces)*, and developed *[bacteriophage](/source/Bacteriophage)* ɸC31 - based cloning vectors used to isolate *Streptomyces* genes. He was also involved in [comparative genomics](/source/Comparative_genomics) of *Streptomyces*.
