# Kefeng Liu

**Kefeng Liu** (; born 12 December 1965), is a Chinese-American [mathematician](/source/Mathematician) who is known for his contributions to [geometric analysis](/source/Geometric_analysis), particularly the geometry, topology and analysis of [moduli spaces](/source/Moduli_spaces) of [Riemann surfaces](/source/Riemann_surfaces) and [Calabi–Yau manifolds](/source/Calabi%E2%80%93Yau_manifold). He is a professor of mathematics at [University of California, Los Angeles](/source/University_of_California,_Los_Angeles), as well as the [executive director](/source/Executive_director) of the [Center of Mathematical Sciences at Zhejiang University](/source/Center_of_Mathematical_Sciences,_Zhejiang_University). He is best known for his collaboration with Bong Lian and [Shing-Tung Yau](/source/Shing-Tung_Yau) in which they establish some [enumerative geometry](/source/Enumerative_geometry) conjectures motivated by [mirror symmetry](/source/Mirror_symmetry).

## Biography

Liu was born in [Kaifeng](/source/Kaifeng), [Henan province](/source/Henan_Province), [China](/source/China). In 1985, Liu received his [B.A.](/source/Bachelor_of_Arts) in mathematics from the Department of Mathematics of [Peking University](/source/Peking_University) in [Beijing](/source/Beijing). In 1988, Liu obtained his [M.A.](/source/Master_of_Arts) from the Institute of Mathematics of the [Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS)](/source/Chinese_Academy_of_Sciences) in Beijing.[1] Liu then went to study in the United States, obtaining a [Ph.D.](/source/Ph.D.) from [Harvard University](/source/Harvard_University) in 1993 under [Shing-Tung Yau](/source/Shing-Tung_Yau).[2]

From 1993 to 1996, Liu was [C. L. E. Moore Instructor](/source/C._L._E._Moore_instructor) at the [Massachusetts Institute of Technology](/source/Massachusetts_Institute_of_Technology). From 1996 to 2000, Liu was an [assistant professor](/source/Assistant_professor) at [Stanford University](/source/Stanford_University). Liu joined the [University of California, Los Angeles](/source/University_of_California,_Los_Angeles) faculty in 2000, where he was promoted to full professor in 2002.[1] In September 2003, Liu was appointed as the head of [Zhejiang University](/source/Zhejiang_University)'s mathematics department.[3] Liu is currently the executive director of the Center of Mathematical Sciences at Zhejiang University.
