The nearest higher neighbor is [Mount Sarbach](/source/Mount_Sarbach), 2.0 km (1.2 mi) to the northwest,[1] with [Epaulette Mountain](/source/Epaulette_Mountain) immediately to the southeast. Kaufmann Peaks is situated south of [Saskatchewan Crossing](/source/Saskatchewan_River_Crossing%2C_Alberta), where the [Icefields Parkway](/source/Icefields_Parkway) intersects with the [David Thompson Highway](/source/David_Thompson_Highway).

## History

Christian and Hans

The *South Peak* (3,110 m) is named for [Hans Kaufmann](/source/Hans_Kaufmann_(alpine_guide)) (1874–1930), the younger of two [Swiss](/source/Switzerland) brothers who were popular mountain guides. [Hans Kaufmann](/source/Hans_Kaufmann_(alpine_guide)) completed twelve [first ascents](/source/First_ascent) in the Rockies during the years 1901 to 1904. The *North Peak* (3,094 m) honors [Christian Kaufmann](/source/Christian_Kaufmann_(alpine_guide)) (1872–1939) who completed 36 first ascents in the Canadian Rockies by making fifteen of those in 1901 and ten more in 1902.[3] The two were half-brothers to [Peter Kaufmann](/source/Peter_Kaufmann_(Alpine_guide)). The first ascent of Kaufmann Peaks was made in 1927 by D. Duncan and guide Ernest Feuz.[3] Recommended by [James Outram](/source/James_Outram_(mountaineer)) in 1903, the mountain's toponym was officially adopted in 1920 by the [Geographical Names Board of Canada](/source/Geographical_Names_Board_of_Canada).[2]

## Geology

Like other mountains in Banff Park, Kaufmann Peaks is composed of [sedimentary rock](/source/Sedimentary_rock) laid down during the [Precambrian](/source/Precambrian) to [Jurassic](/source/Jurassic) periods.[4] Formed in shallow seas, this sedimentary rock was pushed east and over the top of younger rock during the [Laramide orogeny](/source/Laramide_orogeny).[5] A glacier shared with Mount Sarbach resides in the northeast [cirque](/source/Cirque).

## Climate

Based on the [Köppen climate classification](/source/K%C3%B6ppen_climate_classification), Kaufmann Peaks is located in a [subarctic climate](/source/Subarctic_climate) with cold, snowy winters, and mild summers.[6] Winter temperatures can drop below -20 °C with wind chill factors below -30 °C. [Precipitation](/source/Precipitation) [runoff](/source/Surface_runoff) from Kaufmann Peaks drains into the [Mistaya River](/source/Mistaya_River) and [Howse River](/source/Howse_River) which are both tributaries of the [North Saskatchewan River](/source/North_Saskatchewan_River).
