Former Israeli settlement

Katif קָטִיף‎ (Hebrew) Former Israeli settlement Katif Coordinates: 31°22′31″N 34°18′46″E / 31.37528°N 34.31278°E / 31.37528; 34.31278 Founded 1985 Founded by Bnei Akiva graduates

**Katif** ([Hebrew](/source/Hebrew_language): קָטִיף) was an [Israeli settlement](/source/Israeli_settlement) in the [Gush Katif](/source/Gush_Katif) bloc in the [Gaza Strip](/source/Gaza_Strip), about 1 km north of the [Palestinian refugee camp](/source/Palestinian_refugee_camp) of [Deir al-Balah Camp](/source/Deir_al-Balah_Camp).

## History

Katif was founded as a [moshav](/source/Moshav) in 1977 by [Orthodox Jews](/source/Orthodox_Judaism).[1][2] The name is derived from the [archeological site](/source/Archeology) nearby, [Tel Katifa](/source/Tel_Katifa).

Katif was founded as a paramilitary [Nahal](/source/Nahal) settlement in 1973, and handed over to civilians in 1977. Some 70 families, or 330 people, including 220 children, lived in the moshav. A religious elementary school and a high school located there served many of the other settlements in the region. The economy was based on a [plastics](/source/Plastics) factory, a [fabric](/source/Textile) factory, and agriculture, including a nursery and a dairy farm.[3]

Like all the Israeli settlements in the Gaza Strip, Katif was evacuated as part of the [unilateral disengagement plan](/source/Israel's_unilateral_disengagement_plan), decided on by the [Israeli](/source/Israel) government in 2004.

After their eviction, most of the families (forty-five) chose to move to a temporary refugee camp adjacent to [Amatzia](/source/Amatzia%2C_Israel), a previously non-religious moshav of thirty-five families, and start planning their permanent settlement in the area.
