**Katie Rodan** ([née](/source/Birth_name#Maiden_and_married_names) Pregerson, born 1955–1956) is an American [dermatologist](/source/Dermatology), entrepreneur,[2] and author.[3] She is co-creator of the [acne](/source/Acne) management system [Proactiv](/source/Proactiv), co-founder of [multi-level marketing](/source/Multi-level_marketing) skincare company [Rodan + Fields](/source/Rodan_%2B_Fields), and operates a private cosmetic dermatology practice in [Oakland, California](/source/Oakland%2C_California). In 2015, she was listed by *[Forbes](/source/Forbes)* as one of the 50 most successful self-made women in the United States.[4][5]

## Early life

Katie was born Katie Pregerson, the daughter of Bernardine and [Harry Pregerson](/source/Harry_Pregerson), a [microbiology](/source/Microbiology) professor and a federal appeals court judge, respectively. Rodan's family is [Jewish](/source/American_Jews)[6] and she was raised in [Los Angeles](/source/Los_Angeles).[7] She earned her undergraduate degree in history from the [University of Virginia](/source/University_of_Virginia) and her Doctor of Medicine degree from the [University of Southern California School of Medicine](/source/University_of_Southern_California_School_of_Medicine). She completed her internship at [Los Angeles County Hospital](/source/Los_Angeles_County_Hospital)[8] and in 1987 completed her [residency](/source/Residency_(medicine)) in dermatology at [Stanford University School of Medicine](/source/Stanford_University_School_of_Medicine), where she was also appointed chief resident.[9][1]

## Career

In 1984, Rodan and [Kathy A. Fields](/source/Kathy_A._Fields) met during their dermatology residency at Stanford University School of Medicine. In 1995, they developed [Proactiv Solution](/source/Proactiv_Solution) as a skincare treatment for acne. After initially receiving 15% royalties, each was bought out for $50million dollars.

Rodan is an adjunct clinical assistant professor of dermatology at [Stanford University](/source/Stanford_University)[10] and has a private practice in medical, surgical, and cosmetic dermatology.[11]

In 2008, she was named a top doctor in the [East Bay](/source/East_Bay_(San_Francisco_Bay_Area)) by *Oakland Magazine*.[12][13] Rodan has been featured in print and broadcast media as an expert in dermatology, particularly cosmetic dermatology. She has been interviewed and quoted in media, including [Fox Business News](https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Fox_Business_News&action=edit&redlink=1),[2] *[Shape Magazine](/source/Shape_Magazine)*[14][15] *[O Magazine](/source/O_Magazine)*,[16][17] *[Women's Health](/source/Women's_Health_(magazine))* [18] *[Redbook](/source/Redbook)*,[19][20] *[Allure](/source/Allure_(magazine))*,[21] and *[Cosmopolitan](/source/Cosmopolitan_(magazine))*.[22]

In 2002, they launched [Rodan + Fields](/source/Rodan_%2B_Fields). In 2003, Rodan + Fields was purchased by [Estée Lauder](/source/Est%C3%A9e_Lauder_Companies).[23] In 2007, Rodan and Fields bought back the brand from Estée Lauder[24] because they felt "over time it became clear to the doctors that Estee Lauder's priority was its larger legacy brands" and not Rodan+Fields.[25]

In 2006, the company moved to [direct sales](/source/Direct_sales) and [multi-level marketing](/source/Multi-level_marketing). Rodan + Fields uses independent consultants, mostly women, to sell its products. Only two percent of these consultants make more than minimum wage.[26] Its business model has been criticized by consumer advocates as being close to a [pyramid scheme](/source/Pyramid_scheme)[26] According to data from its 2015 income disclosure, 42% didn't get a single paycheck last year.[25]
