***Kathablepharis*** (alternative spelling ***Katablepharis***[1]) is a [genus](/source/Genus) of [single-celled](/source/Single-cell_organism) [eukaryotes](/source/Eukaryote) comprising five to six[2] [species](/source/Species). They are [heterotrophic](/source/Heterotrophic) and live in both [freshwater](/source/Freshwater) and [seawater](/source/Seawater).[3] They have two [flagella](/source/Flagella) and a feeding apparatus consisting of a mouth and two arrays of [microtubules](/source/Microtubule) (one inside the other).[3]

## Etymology

It derives its name from the [Greek](/source/Greek_language) words *κατά (kata)* (downwards) and *βλεφαρίς (blepharis)* ([eyelash](/source/Eyelash)).[1]
