## History

An extension of the [Manistee and North-Eastern Railroad](/source/Manistee_and_North-Eastern_Railroad) northeast of [Nessen City](/source/Nessen_City%2C_Michigan) was completed in 1890.[3] A station was opened 5 miles (8.0 km) south of [Interlochen](/source/Interlochen%2C_Michigan) known as **Horicon**, with a [post office](/source/Post_office) opening in 1897. Edward Wilson was the first [postmaster](/source/Postmaster) at Horicon. The name of the community was changed in 1903 to Karlin, after [Karlín](/source/Karl%C3%ADn), [Austria-Hungary](/source/Austria-Hungary), from whence a number of local settlers originated.[4] The railroad line running through Karlin was removed in 1934.[5]
